Writing Inspiration – Emily Suess

I was thinking about something the other day. I was thinking about whom or what initially put the idea of making money by writing into my head. No, that is an incorrect way to explain it. Let me rephrase that; I was thinking about the person who showed me that I actually could make money by writing. While I was thinking about that person, it dawned on me that I do not think I ever have told her what an inspiration she has been to me.

That person is Emily Suess, of Suess’s Pieces. Emily is one of the funniest people I have ever met. She has a way of writing about everyday events that makes them sound completely hilarious. She is also the first person who ever took a chance on me when it came to paying me for writing. About two summers ago Emily had a little more freelance writing work than she could handle. Knowing that I was trying to break into the freelance writing world, she hired me to do some of her overflow work. It really meant a lot to me that someone who had been writing for money for quite some time would take a chance on me, someone who had never written professionally.

Emily gave me a taste of what I wanted to accomplish, which was being able to write and get paid for it. Writing for her was inspiring and motivating. It was something that I could hold onto until I got my own writing job. I believe that if Emily had not given me a taste of what writing from home would be like, I would have eventually given up on that dream. I will always be thankful to her.

I Love My Blog and I am Thankful for My Readers

It is hard for me to believe that it has actually been 10 days since the last time I wrote in the blog. This time last year, it felt like the only positive thing I had going for me was this blog. I spent all my time either thinking about it, thinking about what to write in it, thinking about who was reading it, or writing in it. My blog represented my whole world.

Do not get me wrong, I still love my blog. I still enjoy thinking about what to write in it, thinking about who is reading it, and I still enjoy writing it. However, my life is so drastically different than it used to be that it has become difficult to update it daily like I used to. In the beginning, as my life got busier and busier, I felt a little guilty for not updating it daily. I felt as if I was letting people down. Recently, I realized that just because I cannot update it daily does not mean I am letting anyone down. It is just that I have had to reprioritize the place that the blog holds in my life.

I love my little blog. I really believe that it has helped me, as well as the people I have met through it, get mentally healthier than I have been in my whole life. I am thankful for all of YOU who take the time to read it, comment, or give your financial support.

Thankful Five

I used to do my Thankful Five on a more regular basis, but lately it seems like I’ve let a lot of things get in the way of it. I was really reminded after a bad few days how important it was for me to keep track of things that I’m thankful for. So I decided that it was in my best interest if I got back into the habit of blogging about five things I’m thankful for.

  • I am thankful for air-conditioning. I dislike the heat. I dislike humidity. When they are combined together I extremely dislike them.
  • I am thankful that my financial aid for school worked out as well as it did.
  • I am thankful for cool summer breeze after a hot summer day.
  • I am thankful for silence.
  • I am thankful for love.

Thankful Five

Taking the time to keep track of the things I am thankful for has been such a good reminder of how much I am blessed. I challenge you to keep track of the things that you are thankful for.

  1. I am thankful for the many thoughts and prayers people have had for my mother and me.
  2. I am thankful for the many tears I have shed and the laughter I have experienced when I have thought of my dad.
  3. I am thankful friends and family who have more rational minds than I do.
  4. I am thankful for being alive. Even though I am really sad, and I miss dad a great deal, I am still very thankful I am alive.
  5. I am thankful for the sounds of the birds chirping, and the woodpecker beating his head on a tree.

Thankful Five

Once a week I try to write down five things  I am thankful for, and post them here. Lately, I have not been as good about this as I should be. Because of all the things that have happened here lately, I guess I have not been paying attention to  the things I am grateful for.

  1. I am thankful for feeling better emotionally.
  2. I am thankful for the grocery shopping we did last night.
  3. I am thankful for friends that make me laugh.
  4. I am thankful for learning how to set up boundaries.
  5. I am thankful for being here with mom. It is nice to know that if she needs me I am very close by. It is also nice to know that if I need her she is close by.

Thankful Five

An important part of my depression recovery has been actively finding things in my life, world, and surroundings that I am thankful for. It has shown me that I have much more to be thankful for than I had thought possible. It is also a practice that has helped me to remain positive when I am facing some extra challenges, and difficulties in my life.

Thankful Five – Letters To People

I have been so busy the last few weeks that I forgot to do my weekly Thankful post. I usually make a list of five things I am thankful for, with a brief description of why I am thankful for them. The other day I saw an interesting idea on my friend Margaret’s blog. She wrote a few short letters to specific people, letting them know why she was thankful for them. You can see it here Thank You . I decided to borrow her idea for this week’s Thankful Five.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for being my best supporter, and cheerleader for the last few years. I do not think you know how much your support has meant to me. You are one of the reasons I am doing as well as I am. You inspire me, and challenge me to live the best I can each, and every day. Thank you for your generosity. You make me feel loved.

Love,

Melissa

Dear Dad,

Thank you for your love, and generosity. Thank you for the laughter, and support. Thank you for the respect, and kind words you give me. I have really enjoyed getting to know you better. I enjoy our relationship. Thank you for always giving me a soft place to fall.

Love,

Melissa

Dear Terri,

Even though we have not known each other all that long, I want you to know how much a value our friendship. Thank you for being such a good friend to me. You have given me a shoulder to cry on, someone to laugh with, and someone to share my joys, and sorrows with. It has been a long time since I had a friend in real life that I felt so comfortable around.

Love,

Melissa

Margaret,

Thank you so much for your constant support, kind words, and friendship. You inspire me daily. Your continued struggles with your own health issues – especially given how young you are – are awe inspiring. You are such a kind, warm, and loving person. I know that God placed you in my life for many reasons. I hope that I can meet you in real life one of these days.

Love,

Melissa

Dear Chrissie, and Susan,

Thank you so much for your forgiveness, and acceptance. I have missed having you in my life. It means so much to me that even after such a long absence you two are so supportive, and loving.

Love,

Melissa
