Recently, I have become more serious about my writing. I entered my first writing contest, and am trying to enter a few more. I am also trying to get better at my writing so I can maybe get some freelance writing work. That means I am putting more time into writing.
Very often I when I am writing, my family decides they need me. It always derails my thought process. I have tried scheduling writing time so that they feel like I am accessible and I do not feel frustrated, but that has not worked out very well.
I need to figure out a way I can write and pay attention to that while at the same time managing the time with my family so I do not feel frustrated.

You could try what I do… run away to the bedroom and close the door 🙂 It helps me if I can do it with pen and paper because, you know, that’s what we were raised to do. THEN you can do that and copy it after, or take your laptop in there with you. Just tell them you’re having a nap ;D

I have been using the pen and paper technique for about a week now, so far it seems to be slightly effective. It is nice also to have everything written out and all I have to do is type what I have already created.

I hear you about family pressures. Uh, I remember when the restroom was not even private because of my daughter being so young. Can you lock yourself in there to write? I also wonder if your husband would agree to an uninterrupted hr/evening time for you, where he is responsible for family “stuff”. Some people I know get up earlier than their family to have the quiet time to write. Others, like me, stay up later into the night. It’s not healthy to do either one if you need the sleep though. Oh, can you afford to hire a sitter or someone to play with your kids (I don’t know how old they are), so you could write? Plus, you could go to a nearby cafe or library to write so you wouldn’t be tempted to relieve the sitter and your kids would know mommy is unavailable. Good luck! It’s important to do things for yourself.

I appreciate your suggestions. My daughter and husband are the guilty parties, both are old enough to understand. I try the staying up late thing, sometimes it works, sometimes I fall asleep. LOL I will keep trying to get them to respect my writing time, there are some contests I want to enter and I really need to concentrate when I write those entries.

I understand completely. It’s not just when I’m writing but when I’m on the phone as well. I find it helps when I find something to keep them busy while I’m online. That way they don’t get too frustrated.

The problem is the people who are being distracting are my husband and 13 yo daughter. They know better. Last night they were doing it again. I told them that the more they distracted me the longer it takes me to write and that means less time with me. They seemed to get it, at least for last night, let’s see how it goes today.
